La Befana
$895 - sold

Height - 16", Width - 6", Depth - 6".  One-of-a-kind figure whose head and limbs are sculpted from polymer clay, with a cloth body over a wire armature, and hand painted porcelain eyes.  She wears clothing and shoes made from original patterns, and carries a basket of toys.

The Good Witch Befana is the traditional Italian Gift Giver.  Her story is much the same as the story of Babouska, of Russia.  It is said that the Magi visited La Befana on their way to see the Christ Child.  They asked her to go with them, but she said she had to clean her house before she left.  After she finished cleaning, she started after the Wise Men.  She never found them, but she now goes through the world at Christmastime, looking for the Christ Child in the faces of children.
